Irreecha (Oromo Thanksgiving)

Irreecha (Oromo Thanksgiving)

Description

Irreecha is a traditional Oromo thanksgiving celebration held after the rainy season, marking the beginning of Birraa, the season associated with renewal and abundance. It is a time for communities to express gratitude to Waaqa (God), gather with family and friends, and celebrate cultural traditions. Major celebrations take place at Hora Harsadi in Bishoftu and Hora Finfinne in Addis Ababa. Participants traditionally gather with fresh green grass and flowers, which are used during ceremonies around the water. The celebrations also feature traditional clothing, songs, prayers, and large community gatherings. For visitors, Irreecha provides an opportunity to observe an important living Oromo cultural tradition. Visitors should respect ceremonial spaces, follow local guidance, and ask permission before taking close-up photographs of participants or religious and cultural rituals.
