Timkat (Ethiopian Epiphany)

Description
Timkat, the Ethiopian celebration of Epiphany, commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the River Jordan. The celebration begins on January 18 with Ketera, when priests and communities accompany their church tabot to a designated body of water. Participants gather for prayers, hymns, and overnight religious ceremonies. On January 19, the main celebration begins with early-morning religious rituals and the blessing and sprinkling of water on the congregation. The tabots are later carried back to their churches in colorful processions accompanied by traditional and religious songs. Timkat is celebrated throughout Ethiopia and is both a religious and cultural occasion. For visitors, it offers an opportunity to observe an important living tradition, but ceremonies and religious spaces should be approached with respect.
